After training in Plastic Surgery in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Howard spent a year as Clinical Research Fellow with Dr Ron Zuker in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Following this he took up a Consultant Post at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee. In 1983, he became Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Dundee.
Having retired in April 2013, Howard still works two sessions each week in Fife (outpatient clinic and day surgery theatre list, and ia an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of St Andrews.
Howard’s sub-specialty interests include breast reconstruction, hand surgery, hypospadias, and burns surgery. For the latter, Howard is particularly interested in sub-Saharan Africa, where over the last 20 years he has been involved, along with others, in establishing a Burn Unit in Blantyre, Malawi and running regular training courses on an annual basis.
