BFIRST Ball 2018

BFIRST Ball 2018

BFIRST organised its second Fundraising Ball event on the second night of the BAPRAS Winter Scientific Meeting on 29th November 2018, at London’s prestigious De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms. This year’s theme was ‘James Bond’ and the evening proved to be a night of glamour, auction and fundraising success. A huge amount of money was raised on the night from auction sales, sponsorship and a fantastic ‘Heads or Tails’ game, with the overall total yet to be announced! More importantly, we are pleased that the event was successful in generating interest from several new volunteers, young and old! We were delighted to see so many new faces, as well as old, supporting the cause of BFIRST. In particular, there was a large presence from trainees attending the ball this year.

The evening started off with an introduction by the President of BAPRAS, David Ward, and then the patron of BFIRST, Lord Ribeiro of Achimota, presented an inspirational speech of his lifetime’s work.

Two short videos were shown: the first showed the success of BFIRST from perspective of the local surgeons themselves. The second, after dinner, allowed us to view interviews from BFIRST volunteer surgeons and also gave an opportunity to thank those who had tirelessly given of their time, effort and resources to go overseas. We were particularly grateful to Nigel Mercer and Chris Hill, who helped with the live auction that followed, as they encouraged people to dig deep into their pockets to support the cause of BFIRST!

Guests ended the evening on the dance floor with a live band and rolling high stakes at the casino. The event ended at about 1 am although we could see several guests still not wanting to leave!

We would like to thank all our guests for their generosity, including those who were not able to make it on the night but were able to donate. Through their continued support, we are all contributing to help fulfil the vision of BFIRST, which is to support and train local surgeons to be self-sufficient in providing sustainable life-changing procedures for their local communities. We look forward to continuing to work with you and hope you will come to future BFIRST events!
